Art Deco Maison Cluney Sterling Silver Goblet NY Mafia Mob Monk Eastman Gang
Historical: This is a very interesting piece of New York Mafia and Monk Eastman Gang Memorabilia.
Sam Schepps (also known as Schapps) was a New York City mobster. He ran gambling houses for Jack Zelig as part of his work with the Monk Eastman Gang.
He was nicknamed the "Squealer" by New York newspapers after he ratted out his accomplices and testified against them at the Becker-Rosenthal trial.
After the trial, he opened up an antique store by the name of Maison Cluney (sometimes spelled Cluny) with his brother Nathan on Madison Ave. But true to his nature, he returned to his life of crime. Stolen goods and pawned items that could not be redeemed due to exorbitant interest rates were funneled through the "respectable" business. Consequently, after forging checks and defrauding an Opera singer out of ,000 worth of diamonds and fleecing a bookie out of ,000, he was arrested on October 3, 1933. He ultimately died a few years later in January 1936.
Many of the items that passed through the Maison Cluny doors were never seen again. This little goblet maybe a clue as to what happened to some of them :)
