Description
This is the most beautiful of the Mint Julep's cups tradition. This cup is made by Quaker Silver, is heavily beaded at the bottom and has the scrolling leaf and vines creating a rest for the cup to sit on the fingers to keep the warmth of the hand from dispelling the frost on the cup, thereby keeping the cocktail cold. Kentucky claims the Mint Julep as it's very own signature cocktail starting as early as 1816. It famously served it's Mint Juleps on the first Kentucky Derby in 1875. The elite carried their own sterling mint julep cups, hence, the dings and dents these beloved cups endured in the passion of Derby racing. This is definitely a treasure to cherish, steeped in tradition. Please note how the cup rests on the fingers by design.Quaker "Blossom" pattern Mint Julep sterling silver cup, #1324 - 3 inches tall by 3 inches wide at the mouth and 2 inches wide at the bottom - 100g solid sterling silver. Excellent condition, perfect patina for a nice sheen. 1 small dent, 1 tiny pit. 1926 - approx 95 years old. This is a true antique.
"Researching the “Q” and crown symbol hallmarks, I found that the series of marks belonged to the Quaker Silver Co. of North Attleborough, Massachusetts. Following is a compilation of snippets tracing the origins of Quaker Silver back to the year 1924 and the Williams & Green Co. of Providence, RI. Harold K. Green was one of the principals of this company. For some reason unknown to me, the Quaker Silver Co. of Attleboro, MA was incorporated in 1926 for the purpose of taking over the business of Williams & Green. Harold K. Green was president and sales manager of the new company. James W. Jennings, who was treasurer and general manager of the old company assumed the same positions in the new."
