For your consideration is an Excessively Rare and Magnificent 1840 Antique "Edward Barnard & Sons" Signed Repousse Sterling Silver Cup and/or Mug! The piece measures about 4" wide from the far edge of the handle to the far edge of the cup, 3" in diameter across the top rim edge, 2-3/4" in diameter at the base/table foot rim, stands about 3-3/8" tall to the top of the rim edge and is marked (impressed on the base) with the English hallmarks...the "lion passant" for sterling silver, the "lion's head" for London, the date letter for 1840 and the Queen's (Victoria) head. There is a period "JDL" monogram as shown.
The company's origins date back to about 1680, when the silversmith Anthony Nelme (d. 1722) established a firm in Ave Maria Lane, London.
Edward Barnard (d. 1855) was first manager and in 1829 became the proprietor, trading as Edward Barnard & Sons, with his sons Edward Barnard (d. 1868), John Barnard and William Barnard (d. 1851). In 1838, they moved to Angel Street, London.
A VERY heavy, VERY substantial well crafted piece weighing 206.7 grams on our scale as shown!
The piece is in excellent, lightly used (if at all) as-found condition overall with an all original, untouched patina to the sterling silver with NO dents/dings anywhere as shown. It could use a good polish if that shiny look is desired. We never polish the antique/vintage silver/silverplate we offer on Ebay...we leave that to the discretion of the winning bidder...and we never guarantee how items will polish out! Please view all of the pictures...we've taken many...& judge the condition & value of this rare, fabulous and historic antique sterling silver piece from a top English silversmith for yourself.
