Silver Sommelier Wine Tasting Cup or Tastevin, a unique shallow cup that began being used in the 1600s by wine makers in Burgundy to judge the maturity, color, clarity and taste of wine in dimly lit wine cellars before the advent of electric lighting. The raised design allowed for judging color and concavities for reflection. By the end of the 1600s they were used across France and made by master silversmiths. Each French region had its own unique style and was viewed as a tool and valued as a piece of art. After electricity the Tastevin was no longer necessary and started being worn around the neck on a ribbon or chain by Sommeliers as a salute to tradition. This lovely Tastevin is believed to be French and silver over brass. The center Medallion is engraved with the word LIBERTE at the top, Statue of Liberte center with a coat of arms on either side. It has a twisted rope wire handle. There are 8 well indentations along the top, 13 raised dots encircling LIBERTE and 13 feather feather strokes along the front bottom with reverse indentations and raises on back. In very good condition with the minimal wear expected for a vintage object. There is a very small symbol within a square to the right of the twisted rope on the back. I am unable to discern.
